What is West Coast Swing?

West Coast Swing is a modern partner dance built on lead-and-follow connection, danced to music you already know — pop, R&B, acoustic, lo-fi, blues, soul, remixes, and more. It’s smooth, elastic, improvisational, and designed for social dancing, not memorized choreography.

Unlike circular dances like Lindy Hop or progressive dances like Two-Step, West Coast Swing is mostly danced in a straight “slot,” which gives both partners room to add their own style, footwork, and musical interpretation.

At its core, WCS is:

  • Lead–follow based (not choreographed)

  • Improvised (you don’t have to dance the same way every time)

  • Musical (you can hit accents, lyrics, rhythms)

  • Shared (both partners get freedom, not just the leader)

  • Elastic (the connection stretches and releases instead of staying rigid)

Most patterns end with an “anchor,” a relaxed finishing point that creates the stretch WCS is known for — giving the dance its smooth, controlled, elastic feel.

If you’ve seen videos where both partners are dancing “together but different,” trading ideas, reacting to the music — that’s West Coast Swing.
